Master Your Pricing with the VAT Calculator

Whether you are generating invoices for clients, pricing your e-commerce products, or filing your quarterly business tax returns, our VAT Calculator instantly processes the math required to add or extract Value Added Tax.

How to Add VAT (Gross Calculation)

If you know the base price of your product and need to figure out what to charge the customer, you Add VAT.

The Formula: Gross Price = Net Price × (1 + VAT Percentage).
For example, if you have a product that costs £100 and the VAT rate is 20%, you multiply £100 by 1.20 to get a Gross Price of £120.

How to Remove VAT (Net Calculation)

If you bought an item for £120 and need to know how much VAT you can reclaim on your tax return, you cannot simply subtract 20% of the total. (£120 – 20% = £96, which is incorrect!)

The Reverse Formula: Net Price = Gross Price / (1 + VAT Percentage).

Correct Math: £120 / 1.20 = £100 Net Price. The VAT is the £20 difference.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the difference between VAT and Sales Tax?
Sales Tax (common in the USA) is collected only once at the final point of sale to the consumer. VAT (Value Added Tax) is collected at every stage of the supply chain (manufacturer to wholesaler, wholesale to retailer). However, businesses can reclaim the VAT they pay, meaning the end consumer ultimately bears the full tax burden.
2. What are the standard VAT rates?
VAT rates vary by country. The standard rate in the UK is 20%. In the European Union, minimum standard rates are 15%, but they often range from 19% (Germany) to 21% (Spain) and up to 27% (Hungary). Some essential items like basic food or children’s clothing may qualify for reduced (5%) or zero (0%) VAT rates.
3. Is VAT the same as GST?
Essentially, yes. GST stands for Goods and Services Tax. Countries like India, Australia, and Canada use the term GST, but the mechanics of the tax (a multi-stage tax added to value) are practically identical to VAT. You can use this calculator for GST as well!
4. Do I have to charge VAT to my customers?
It depends on your business revenue. In the UK, you must register for and charge VAT if your VAT-taxable turnover exceeds £90,000 in a 12-month period. If you are under the threshold, you do not charge VAT, but you also cannot reclaim VAT on your business expenses.
5. Why is removing VAT confusing?
Because percentage math is not perfectly reversible. If you add 20% to 100, you get 120. But if you subtract 20% from 120, you get 96, not 100. To correctly reverse the math, you must use the formula: Gross / 1.20 = Net. Our calculator handles this automatically in “Remove VAT” mode.
