Master Combinatorics with Our Combination & Permutation Calculator
Whether you’re calculating lottery odds, figuring out how many ways a poker hand can be dealt, or determining secure password combinations, our Combination Calculator computes exact possibilities instantly—handling massively large numbers with zero loss of precision.
Combinations vs. Permutations: What’s the difference?
The core rule of combinatorics boils down to one simple question: Does the order matter?
Combinations: Order does NOT matter.
Think of a fruit salad containing apples, grapes, and bananas. Whether you add the apples first or the bananas first, you still end up with the exact same fruit salad. If you are picking 5 cards from a 52-card deck, the order they arrive in your hand doesn’t change the hand. This is a Combination (nCr).
Permutations: Order DOES matter.
Think of a digital lock on a safe. If the passcode is 1-2-3, typing 3-2-1 will not open the safe, even though it uses the exact same numbers. The specific arrangement is crucial. This is a Permutation (nPr).
Formulas Cheat Sheet
-
Combinations (No Repetition):
nCr = n! / (r!(n-r)!)
Example: Drawing cards from a deck. -
Permutations (No Repetition):
nPr = n! / (n-r)!
Example: Runners finishing a race in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. -
Permutations (With Repetition):
n^r
Example: A 4-digit PIN code (0000 to 9999). -
Combinations (With Repetition):
(n+r-1)! / (r!(n-1)!)
Example: Choosing 5 scoops of ice cream from 3 available flavors.
