Styling & Health Profile

An hourglass figure is characterized by roughly equal bust and hip measurements, with a significantly narrower waist. This shape naturally aligns with a low health risk Waist-to-Hip ratio.

The 4 Main Body Shapes

The fashion and fitness industries typically categorize female body shapes into four primary archetypes based on the relationship between the bust, waist, and hips:

  • Hourglass: Bust and hips are roughly the same size, with a very well-defined, narrow waist.
  • Pear (Triangle): Hips are significantly wider than the bust and shoulders.
  • Apple (Inverted Triangle): Bust and shoulders are noticeably broader than the hips, with less waist definition.
  • Rectangle (Straight): Bust, waist, and hips are fairly uniform in size, creating a straight silhouette.

Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR) Risk

The World Health Organization (WHO) uses WHR as an indicator of health. Storing excess fat around the waist (visceral fat) carries a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes than storing fat in the hips.

Women
  • Low Risk: 0.80 or lower
  • Moderate: 0.81 – 0.84
  • High Risk: 0.85+
Men
  • Low Risk: 0.95 or lower
  • Moderate: 0.96 – 0.99
  • High Risk: 1.00+

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I measure my body accurately?
Use a soft, flexible measuring tape. Measure your Bust around the fullest part of your chest. Measure your Waist at the narrowest point of your torso, usually just above the belly button. Measure your Hips around the widest part of your buttocks. Keep the tape level and snug, but not tight.
2. What algorithm does the calculator use for shape?
We use the standard fashion industry algorithmic thresholds. For example, if your hips are more than 3.6 inches larger than your bust, you are classified as a Pear. If your bust and hips are within 3.6 inches of each other, but your waist is much smaller, you are an Hourglass.
3. Can men use this calculator?
Yes! While body shape terminology (Pear, Hourglass) is mostly utilized in women’s fashion, the Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR) is a vital medical metric for both men and women. Changing the gender toggle adjusts the health risk thresholds for the WHR output.
4. Why is Waist-to-Hip Ratio important for health?
WHR is an indicator of body fat distribution. People who carry more weight around their midsection (an “apple” shape) are at higher risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and premature death compared to people who carry weight in their hips and thighs (a “pear” shape).
5. Does my shape change if I lose weight?
Usually, no. Your fundamental body shape is largely determined by genetics and your underlying bone structure (pelvis width, shoulder span). Gaining or losing fat typically scales your measurements up or down proportionally, keeping you in the same general shape category.
