Master Your Maternity Timeline

Pregnancy math can be confusing. Whether you are tracking naturally, conceived via IVF, or tracking from ovulation, our clinical Due Date Calculator demystifies the timeline and gives you precise, week-by-week developmental milestones.

How is the Due Date Calculated?

In medical science, a standard pregnancy is considered to last exactly 280 days (40 weeks). However, the starting line depends on the method of calculation:

  • Naegele’s Rule (LMP): Doctors calculate from the first day of your Last Menstrual Period (LMP). You add 7 days, subtract 3 months, and add 1 year. This assumes a perfect 28-day cycle. If your cycle is longer, our calculator mathematically adjusts the due date forward.
  • Conception Date: If you know exactly when you ovulated/conceived, we simply add 266 days (38 weeks) to that date.
  • IVF (In Vitro Fertilization): IVF dates are highly precise. For a Day-3 embryo transfer, we add 263 days. For a Day-5 transfer, we add 261 days.

Trimester Breakdown

Pregnancy is divided into three major developmental stages called trimesters. Knowing which trimester you are in helps you anticipate physiological changes and fetal milestones:

  • First Trimester: Weeks 1 to 13 (End)
  • Second Trimester: Weeks 14 to 27 (End)
  • Third Trimester: Weeks 28 to Birth
  • Full Term: Week 39 onwards

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Why am I “2 weeks pregnant” on the day I conceive?
It sounds strange, but it is the medical standard. Doctors start counting pregnancy from the first day of your Last Menstrual Period (LMP), not the day of conception. Since ovulation typically occurs two weeks after your LMP, you are technically considered “2 weeks pregnant” the moment the egg is fertilized.
2. How accurate is this due date calculator?
It is mathematically perfect based on standard clinical formulas. However, human biology is not a perfect machine. Only about 4% to 5% of babies are born on their exact due date. Consider your EDD as the center of a 4-week “due month” window (from 37 to 41 weeks).
3. Can an ultrasound change my due date?
Yes. An early dating ultrasound (performed in the first trimester) measures the Crown-Rump Length (CRL) of the fetus. If the ultrasound dating differs from your LMP calculation by more than 5 to 7 days, your doctor will officially change your due date to match the ultrasound, as it is considered more accurate.
4. What if I have irregular cycles?
If your cycles are highly irregular, calculating by LMP can be inaccurate because ovulation doesn’t reliably happen on Day 14. In this case, an early ultrasound is the best way to determine your true gestational age and due date.
5. What does “Full Term” actually mean?
Medical definitions have shifted slightly in recent years to reflect fetal lung and brain development:
Early Term: 37 weeks, 0 days to 38 weeks, 6 days.
Full Term: 39 weeks, 0 days to 40 weeks, 6 days.
Late Term: 41 weeks, 0 days to 41 weeks, 6 days.
Postterm: 42 weeks, 0 days and beyond.
6. How are IVF due dates calculated?
IVF bypasses standard cycle logic. Because the exact age of the embryo is known at the time of transfer, the math is precise. For a 3-day embryo transfer, the due date is exactly 263 days from the transfer date. For a 5-day embryo (blastocyst), it is exactly 261 days from the transfer date.
